23 Jun Ultra-Processed Food: Eat More & Gain More!
Ultra processed foods make up a whopping 60-70% of the Standard American Diet (aka “SAD diet”).
A new fascinating study through the National Institues of Health assessed the impact of the highly processed foods on caloric consumption. For four weeks, participants ate either minimally processed or ultra-processed foods which were essentially the SAME in terms of carbohydrates, proteins, salt, fat, fiber, and sugar. They were told to eat as much or as little as they wanted.
Those who are the ultra-processed foods (such as chicken nuggets and tater tots) consumed 500 more calories a day and gained 2lb over the 4 weeks vs those participants who ate minimally processed foods (such as chicken breasts and potatoes).
Even if the food contains the same macronutrients, highly processed foods propel us to eat more!
