IBS / SIBO (IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME)

IBS / SIBO (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

It is estimated that upwards of 25% of the world population suffers from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Symptoms include bloating, gas, stool changes (diarrhea, constipation, or both), nausea, belching, and reflux. Recent research has revealed that 60-70% of IBS is actually caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine (SIBO).
Diet, antimicrobial agents, judicious use of probiotics and other digestive support can all be very helpful in addressing SIBO. That said, in many patients, SIBO remains a chronic condition. In these cases, identifying and addressing the underlying cause/s of the overgrowth and working on prevention of recurrence become crucial.
