Dr Tal Ben-Shachar is a world renowned expert in the science of happiness. He is the professor of the most popular course ever at Harvard. He has a fascinating definition of Happiness which includes 5 elements with the acronym “SPIRE”.
S: Spiritual Wellbeing: This is about finding a sense of meaning and purpose in your life. It’s about being present and mindful.
P: Physical Wellbeing: This includes taking care of your nutrition, and getting enough physical activity and, rest and recovery.
I: Intellectual Wellbeing: This element of happiness is about deep learning and curiosity.
R: Relational Wellbeing: Relational wellbeing means the quality time we spend with people we care about, and who care about us. It’s about kindness and generosity.
E: Emotional Wellbeing: That’s about learning to deal with painful emotions, which is a very important part of a happy life, as well as generating and cultivating pleasurable emotions.
