Could your Diet Coke lead to Atrial Fibrillation?

A new study published in Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology found that drinking 2 liters or more of artificially sweetened drinks per week was associated with a 20% incease in atrial fibrillation (AF), a dangerous arrhythmia which increases the risk of blood clots that can cause heart attacks and stroke.

Interestingly, the study also reported a 10% increased risk of AF in those who drank more than 2L per week of sugar-sweetened beverages.

This population based-study points to an association and cannot yet confirm causation between artificial sweeteners and AF.

Makes sense to me to try to wean off of all artificial sweeteners and reduce sugar consumption as much as possible!
